The Dortmunder Lager style emerged from Dortmund, Germany and was soon the choice of local industrial workers. The style is slightly darker in color than Pilsner, with a slight golden honey tone. It tends to be a bit less bitter with more emphasis given to the sweet malt flavors of German barley.
The Dortmunder Lager was originally created in the image of the German Pilsner. However Dortmunder’s unique water profile emphasized different aspects of German barley and noble hops than its pilsner cousin. This pale colored lager is brilliantly clear with a floral, almost perfume-like aroma from the hop additions. Instead of being bitter, the Dortmunder flavor emphasizes a creamed corn like sweetness, with almost no perceivable bitterness.
